I like surprises, therefore I like this album - it's as simple as that really. The key to a great album is a great opening track, and Vampire Weekend certainly deliver. 'Mansard Roof' is one of the catchiest songs I have ever heard, which proves that all you need is a delightfully simple melody, some retro organs and marching-band style drums. Things only get better from here with 'A-Punk', which is a fantastic little slice of indie rock. The temptation to join in with the punk-style chants is always irresistible. The band also get quite experimental with traditional African rhythms on 'Cape Kod Kwassa Kwassa' and 'Bryn', and even Baroque string sections on 'M79', how can a band this nerdy become so popular?I have yet to delve into Vampire Weekend's latest effort, 'Contra', and to be honest I don't feel the need to yet because with every summer, this album just adds more and more memories. It'll be a while yet before I get bored of this.
