A lot of people truly hate Slipknot; they are honestly disgusted by their grotesque appearance and apparent lack of talent. But a joke to metal? Come on that's a bit far...

Strip back the masks and you certainly won't find a pretty face, but what you will find is some outstanding musicianship. Corey Taylor overdoes his angry voice on many occasions, but tracks like 'Scissors' show that he has great characterisation skills as he sounds weak and frightened. Joey Jordison knows how to thrash, but what I wasn't expecting was 'Liberate' with its pseudo-disco-funk syncopation - drummers are often too foolish to discredit this guys skill. As for DJ Sid Wilson, his incessant scratching on 'Spit It Out' turns the track into of the best rap-metal collisions from the long gone era of nu-metal. The usual two guitars and a bass complete the core of the band, with their whines and drones adding to that of Taylor's vocals.

I admit that on top of all of this, two additional drummers and a sampler are rather unnecessary, and that they are barely noticeable most of the time. It annoys me that this band are mostly about selling their image to angst-ridden outcasts when there is actually something good underneath, you just mustn't be so quick to discredit them.
