  • Shakespears Sister - Songs from the Red Room

    James Moorhouse - 11/13/2009

    3 Stars

13 may be an unlucky for some, but this has been the number of years since the last Shakespears Sister album was recorded (#3 was recorded in 1996 but did not surface until an independent release in 2004). However this 'new' CD is recognisable to fans as the previously released solo material from Siobhan Fahey through her website and sporadic single releases from 2002-2005. In fact, the only new track is the duet Was It Worth It? with old pal Terry Hall. What makes this release frustrating is that it is not new material but a compilation of previously released solo material. But what a compilation! Taking its name from the dream space in Twin Peaks, this collection of 11 songs showcases what an excellent songwriter Siobhan Fahey is. A regular on the London clubscene with regular DJ spots at Madame JoJos, the electro influence is evident. Siobhan is still a master of her game with the snarling paranoia of Bad Blood and Cold; the pure pop of Pulsatron and A Man In Uniform; and the knowing cover of Linda Lamb's electro anthem Hot Room. The cohesiveness of the album betrays this was intended as a Siobhan solo album but reverted back to the name of her old band will hopefully gain this album greater recognition. Whilst the original version of Bitter Pill is sorely missed, the new rockier version fits in much better with the rest of the album. Whilst it is good to finally have all of these songs available on one disc for the first time, here's hoping that this is an indication of more things to come.

  • Alina Ibragimova - J.S Bach: Sonatas & Partitas

    Francisco Aguirre - 11/10/2009

Recently I have listened to this incredible Artist live at Wigmore Hall in London. She played with a silky tone letting her violin resonate without much vibrato. Ibragimova does the same with Bach. Although Bach requires a high level of technical mastery from the performer, she manages to present here a light version of these violin solo masterpieces. This style of playing brings new colours to this music and the polyphony and melodic lines can be enjoyed by anyone looking for a nice introduction to the Baroque violin.

  • Various Artists - Butchering The Beatles

    Joseph Cymrank - 11/10/2009

WOW! What a winner. Its great Beatles numbers cranked up to pure inspired heavy metal, and not the old 70s metal but right up to 2009. Each track is truly a inspired piece of power metal with the fabulous fun of totally enjoying and the artists obviously loving the songs but really letting rip with their own heavy metal style. I've even played it to a few Beatles fans in the hope of really irritating them, but no! Even they could hear these versions were inspired and brilliant. So if your into metal, buy it, you'll love it, and if you want to give a really off the wall pressie for your old grandma or uncle, this will convert them. You'll soon have granny dressing in leather and headbanging away between making her lace doilies for the church jumble sale. This is one great album.

If this isn't in your record collection then there may be something wrong with you. Or right. This album hits you straight in the heart and doesn't stop there. Whether you're about to play football in the finals or just need some motivation to get out of bed, this album is the medicine you need. Back with emotionally charged tracks this to be the best album of Eminem's works and the one you all should own!

  • Creed - Human Clay

Grab hold of the CD remote and mosh to a fantastic album filled with the emotional vocals from Scott Stapp, similar in sound to Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder (TEN era) but with added power that keeps it firmly in place with current rock sounds.

Opening with the powerful hard rock sound of 'Are You Ready?', the album builds and builds from the opener through to the closer of 'Inside Us All' and before you know you are a CREED fan!

Favourite stand out tracks are 'Are You Ready?', 'What If', 'Say I', Faceless Man' 'With Arms Wide Open' & 'Higher' and feeds in nicely to 2001's 'Weathered'. If you like your hard rock heavy but melodic then you cannot go wrong with that of Scott Stapp!!

  • All Time Low - Nothing Personal

At the first listen, I prefered their previous album, 'So Wrong, It's Right', and by the third I loved it!
Sure it's a little more electro now, and a little less 'rocky', but trust me, this is a must buy for any pop-punk fan!

Their released track, 'weightless' is as infectious as swine flu, and will have you bopping around the place! 'Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don't)' is another brilliant track that you will probably be humming for the next 3 days after you listen to it!
    I certainly was!

So, go ahead, let your inner teen loose!
    WOO WOO WOO!
    =^.^=

  • - Escapology [Explicit Lyrics]

Robbie Williams, the ex-Take That star, made his name with 'Angels' in 1997 but in 2002 he launched himself into the album that he hoped would propel him into shock American superstardom having signed a £80m contract with EMI. Sadly the album did not fulfill his dream and yet the album, although recorded to appeal to Americans - 'Revolution' - it is still Robbie at heart and worth every listen. 'Nan's Song' should be avoided but the rest is pure genious and is filled with a mix of genres from the Queen-eseque 'Love Somebody' to what only Robbie does best with 'Feel'.

Of course it is as much a Robbie album as you would expect but don't expect anything like his first 3 albums as this is seen as a mature turn in his career, just a shame that this development did not shine through in his next album 'Intensive Care'!

  • Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport

    Gary Dicks - 10/14/2009

    4 Stars

Since the release of 'Street Horrrsing', I, like many a Fuck Buttons fan, have been yearning to hear more from them. This may be misleading and suggest that what we heard in 'Street Horrrsing' had potential but wasn't good enough. This was certainly not the case. It was one of those rare records (that are getting rarer with every release) that sounded like something fresh and previously undiscovered. Many of the notions behind their music were not at all fresh but it had that "edge" that oh-so-many music journalists have talked about for so long.

However, that was then and this is now. 'Tarot Sport' is Fuck Buttons' second album to date and is a natural progression in sound. It is still very "them" but is subtly less leftfield and more danceable. This has been widely attributed to the fact that dance DJ Andrew Weatherall produced it, though I think it has been a subconscious decision between the Buttons to steer their noise in this direction. I mean: who wouldn't like their audience to dance to their music?
An organ-player at a funeral maybe... But 'Tarot Sport', as melancholy as the subject matters surrounding some of the tracks may be, is certainly not the funeral march. It's upbeat, aggressive and intelligent, and deserves a place in the CD player of any post-rock, dance or IDM fan.

  • Various Artists - Renaissance: The Masters Series - James Zabiela

    Gary Dicks - 10/5/2009

    4 Stars

The word 'genius' gets bandied around far too often nowadays for my liking. As does the word 'legend'. And so I try to be very careful when applying these words to people. However, within the fraternities of clubbing culture and especially that sub-culture of progressive house, the name of James Zabiela has already become associated with both of the above words. I hasten to add that I wholeheartedly agree with anyone whose opinion of him is this. He is a genius. And this, only his second major mix CD release for Renaissance, is exemplary of Zabiela's gift with electronic music and its various tools and tricks.

Live, he is no ordinary DJ and getting that across on a CD is always difficult but he shows his extraordinary skills with great effect here and, I might add, better than on his debut for Reniassance (Alive), which was certainly a mix CD to reckon with but, as his primary genre implies, James Zabiela progressed.
These mixes are not filled with dancefloor smashes nor a load of esoteric progressive house tunes that only the most hardcore of followers will recognise - the balance is good and, to the tuned ear, his influence on them is outstanding.

  • Bert Jansch - Bert Jansch

This is Bert's debut album and in my opinion it's his best. Amazing guitar work and beautiful arrangements, a must buy for anyone who likes folk/blues. Fans of Nick Drake or Jackson C. Frank will appreciate this. *****

  • Paramore - Brand New Eyes

    Nariece Sanderson - 10/1/2009

    3 Stars

Out of all the past Paramore albums, this is NOT the best. It's okay in it's own ways though. The sound is less heavy, less punky. On certain songs, like 'the only exeption' it's very acoustic. If your looking for pop punk, don't bother with this album, but do make an effort to download my fave songs. The lyrics are darker. More meaningful. If your a loyal paramore fan, this album is still worth a purchase. My favourite songs are the first 4.

  • - Bass Generation

    Chris Williams - 10/1/2009

    1 Stars

Whilst the album cover is amazing, unfortunately the album itself just isn't as good. This second attempt from Basshunter is no where near as good as Now You're Gone - The Album.

Best Track - Numbers (which is the hidden track at the end)

Worst Track - Take Your Pick - There's Plenty To Choose From!

  • - Number Ones

Due to his death and the resurgence in interest in his music. It would be easy to say how brilliant Michael Jackson and his music are. But leaving his tragic demise (and fall from grace) out of the equation. This album is a brilliant listen. It signposts all of his solo career and any fan or newbie to MJ will love it. But if you want to capture the brilliance of Michael Jackson you have to listen to the music he made with his brothers as part of Motown Legends the Jackson 5. That aside this is a very good album and well worth the money.

  • Deadmau5 - For Lack of a Better Name

    Tom Gibbons - 9/24/2009

    4 Stars

I have just returned from the states with the new Deadmau5 album in hand, ahead of it's October 5th UK release. Joel Zimmerman aka 'Deadmau5' is making his way to the top of the Progressive House genre of Electro music, which will surely be further aided by this album.

'For Lack Of A Better Name' is an awesome collection of future dancefloor classics. The album seems to be broken down into 3 sections, tracks 1-5 are verging on cheesy electro, with featured vocalists Rob Swire (pendulum) and MC Flipside making an appearance, however, it gets a whole lot better from there on in, with straightforward banging techno.

The last 2 tracks remind me of the Deadmau5 classic -'Faxing Berlin' with epic trance breakdowns played at a house music tempo. My highlight of the album is the song 'Strobe' - possibly the best song he has ever written.

This album is a must for any dance fan's collection and I suggest you pre-order your copy now, you will not be disappointed ;)

  • Mark Knopfler - Get Lucky (CD/DVD Digipack)

    Andrew Spinner - 9/22/2009

    4 Stars

A return to form for Mark Knopfler, after his mildly disappointing Kill To Get Crimson. Here, by contrast, he's willing to up the ante a little, as tracks like Cleaning My Gun and Border Reiver display a slightly more aggressive stance - although aggressive is hardly a word to associate with the gentle Knopfler. The rest of the album is made up of generally low-key, folk-style affairs; while he shows his Celtic influences, he doesn't allow them to run completely amok, and the overall result is an understated, impeccably-produced, and rather beautiful collection of songs from the fingerpicking maestro.

  • Paramore - The Final RIOT!

    Rachel Smith - 9/19/2009

    4 Stars

This Album has to be the best live album I own, this album contains live songs from the previous two albums and in my opinion are the best songs from the other albums. All I have to say is that if you are a paramore fan you will love this album, it shows just how talented they are.

  • Flobots - Fight With Tools

    Michael Naeem - 9/10/2009

    4 Stars

Just an all round amazing album. All the songs on this album have a meaning behind them, much like Rage against the machine.

'Handlebars' is probably the most famous of all the Flobots songs, but 'Rise', 'Combat', 'Same Thing' are all equally good.

Every songs on 'Fight with Tools' have meaningful lyrics which makes a change to most modern day music.

I would defo recommend this album to everybody!
