Wow, this one is one of the greatest albums of all time by legendary poet, activist, visionary and multi talented Bob Marley. Whatever the time of day, season or occasion it is, this album will put you in a good mood. Marley is an outstanding musical genius whose songs will live on forever. The album has timeless masterpieces such as I Shot The Sherriff and Stir It Up. This album is as essential as the air we breathe.

  • Various  Artist - Running Trax

    4 Stars

I have recently started the gym and was getting very bored with the radio in the corner so asked the staff if I could put Running Trax on that I got for Christmas. She agreed and everyone in the gym suddenly had an energy burst. There are a great selection of songs for running, exercising and for when I do my housework and even to put me in a happy mood. The album lives up to its name if you need motivation to exercise or run this CD will give you energy by the bucket load. It really keeps you motivated. Burn baby burn them calories - excellent album.

I know myself and a lot of Whitney Houston fans were extremely excited with the news that Whitney was to bring a new album out. Her crystal voice clear dominated radio and her voice commanded centre stage. This album is ok but very disappointing to her previous chart topping days. Her voice is a lot less powerful than it used to be. I will give her next album to come a chance, but don't hold out much hope.

  • Sade - Soldier of Love

    hazel rigazio - 2/4/2010

    4 Stars

I am a massive Sade fan and have long awaited the new album and it certainly doesn't disappoint. If you are going to make an entrance and stage a comeback this is the way to do it. Every song is great pure sophisticated and mature rnb. Sade has an atmospheric power about her and wraps you in her songs. There are no booty shaking songs or club bangers just very enjoyable, beautiful songs, perfect for valentines.

Fantastic album that really showcases pixie's amazing voice. The songs have mesmerizing features about them and the album is packed with great song after song. She is really growing fantastically as an established artist. If you thought cry me out is amazing then you are in for an absolute treat with the rest of the songs. I love the mix of styles from pop to catchy feel good songs you won't want to or be able to get out of your head.

This is their Debut album and I was very impressed with the whole album, the track One by one is featured on CSI Miami. On hearing the track on CSI I went to find who sang the song, and on the merit of that one track I bought the album, and I was glad I did, it is easy on the ears and very good to sing along to. I would recommend this album to everyone

  • Victoria De Los Angeles - Puccini: La Bohème

Probably the only version you will need. NEVER out of the catalogue since it was initially issued in 1956. You might get better sound from a more recent performance but not the same passion and intensity.

Just listen to the end of Act 1 to know!!

  • Alexandra Burke - Overcome

    Anna Whitwood - 1/31/2010

Winning the X factor does not always mean success but Alexandra Burke is one of the few stars to not only bring out a successful first album but show promising signs of a bright future beyond the UK.

I think this is an outstanding debut album from an X factor winner exceeding people's expectations. Listening to the album is very enjoyable and unpredictable, something Leona's debut lacked at times. You don't become bored by the time you get to track three like with Spirit, as it provides the listener with more get up and go songs.

She pulls off a strong, confident and very sexy vocals as perfectly as she does angelic and melodic. It has a great mix of genres including pop, dance, soul and rnb ... so something for everyone.

This album has definitely got everything you would expect and more! Alexandra has proven with this album she is not another diva releasing ballad after ballad ... . Although there are three ballads on this album, they are all very powerful and worthy of chart success. However, the upbeat tracks such as 'Bad Boys' and 'Broken Heels' are ones to look out for and are by far my favourite.

I saw her perform 'Bad Boys' over Christmas and this definitely influenced me buying her album ... and she looked amazing. Without a doubt this is an album worth buying which can be enjoyed over and over again. Happy listening!

  • Slipknot - Slipknot

    Peter Luscombe - 1/31/2010

    3 Stars

A lot of people truly hate Slipknot; they are honestly disgusted by their grotesque appearance and apparent lack of talent. But a joke to metal? Come on that's a bit far...

Strip back the masks and you certainly won't find a pretty face, but what you will find is some outstanding musicianship. Corey Taylor overdoes his angry voice on many occasions, but tracks like 'Scissors' show that he has great characterisation skills as he sounds weak and frightened. Joey Jordison knows how to thrash, but what I wasn't expecting was 'Liberate' with its pseudo-disco-funk syncopation - drummers are often too foolish to discredit this guys skill. As for DJ Sid Wilson, his incessant scratching on 'Spit It Out' turns the track into of the best rap-metal collisions from the long gone era of nu-metal. The usual two guitars and a bass complete the core of the band, with their whines and drones adding to that of Taylor's vocals.

I admit that on top of all of this, two additional drummers and a sampler are rather unnecessary, and that they are barely noticeable most of the time. It annoys me that this band are mostly about selling their image to angst-ridden outcasts when there is actually something good underneath, you just mustn't be so quick to discredit them.

  • Primus - Sailing The Seas Of Cheese

    Peter Luscombe - 1/31/2010

    4 Stars

Les Claypool is a genius, there is no denying it. His bass-playing skills are just phenomenal; he pretty much slaps, pops and even strums his way through this album effortlessly. It may come as no surprise to learn that when he went to audition for Metallica, he was rejected for being 'too good'.

However, Primus really isn't for everyone, but then Primus aren't a traditional band. Drummer Tim Alexander manages somehow to slot in and around the convoluted riffs, without taking too much attention away from Claypool. Claypool himself sounds like Kermit the Frog with a blocked nose; of course this suits the humorous lyrics but takes some getting used to. The dissonant riffs come from the bass, not the guitar, which instead produces a lot of noise, like some kind of unmelodic grunge.

    To sum up:
If you have an ear for funk-metal-Zappaesque crossovers, you'll probably love it.
If you have 'normal' ears however, you probably won't.

  • Michael Jackson - King Of Pop, Deluxe Edition

    Connor Sams - 1/31/2010

    4 Stars

The late Michael Jackson's "King of Pop" album is definitely one of his best.
The album contains the most famous hits, including Bad, Billie Jean, The way you make me feel, Scream and Dirty Diana. This album is a definite must buy for any Michael Jackson fan.

  • Stone Sour - Come What(ever) May

    Peter Luscombe - 1/30/2010

Not revolutionary, but solid songwriting throughout. Through Glass and Zzyzx Rd. are definitely the standouts due to Corey Taylor conveying more than just raw anger through some unexpectedly brilliant vocals.

  • Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend

    Peter Luscombe - 1/30/2010

    4 Stars

I like surprises, therefore I like this album - it's as simple as that really.

The key to a great album is a great opening track, and Vampire Weekend certainly deliver. 'Mansard Roof' is one of the catchiest songs I have ever heard, which proves that all you need is a delightfully simple melody, some retro organs and marching-band style drums. Things only get better from here with 'A-Punk', which is a fantastic little slice of indie rock. The temptation to join in with the punk-style chants is always irresistible.

The band also get quite experimental with traditional African rhythms on 'Cape Kod Kwassa Kwassa' and 'Bryn', and even Baroque string sections on 'M79', how can a band this nerdy become so popular?

I have yet to delve into Vampire Weekend's latest effort, 'Contra', and to be honest I don't feel the need to yet because with every summer, this album just adds more and more memories. It'll be a while yet before I get bored of this.

  • - Damnation

    Peter Luscombe - 1/30/2010

Opeth. A band that probably the majority of people that regularly visit this site have never even heard of. Don't google them yet though, as you will probably run away in fear.

As for this album, we start off with 'Windowpane', a song which to begin with sounds bleak and desolate. Frontman Mikael Akerfeld is not just a pretty voice, he is also a sensational poet, 'Blank face in the windowpane, Made clear in seconds of light' he whispers. Not bad for someone whose mother tongue is Swedish. For those of you who like to listen to your music with gay abandon, then maybe you would like to stop reading here. You'll struggle to find passages in these songs that are in a major key, but then of course that is your loss.

As tracks go on, there are plenty of reverberated guitars, soft drum beats and even mellotrons, and with most tracks hovering around five minutes, if you have a short-attention span then this is most likely not for you either. You may use adjectives such as washy or empty, whereas I hear tension, a slow-burning anger or desperation. Again, your loss, go listen to some Green Day.

The standout piece for me is the instrumental track entitled 'Ending Credits'. It is in a very similar vain to that of 'Exit Music (For A Film)' by Radiohead, although weirdly not as depressing, (that would take some beating). Are you still reading? Are you still interested?

So I guess then it would surprise you to learn that this seemingly harmless, stripped-down, acoustic album comes from one of Sweden's premier Death Metal bands. But don't be so quick to judge because trust me there are no nasty surprises here, just some damn good acoustic songs.

  • Diablo Swing Orchestra - Sing Along Songs For The...

    Peter Luscombe - 1/30/2010

    4 Stars

On first hearing 'Tap Dancer's Dilemma' my mind exploded. Trumpets? Swing Rhythms? Distorted Guitars? Wait, what?!

This album is so much fun; each song has its own style, borrowing from influences which range from the aforementioned swing, to tango and traditional eastern European music. It never runs out of fresh ideas and every track surprises you.

It is difficult to sum this band up in one term, or indeed make recommendations based on other bands. But think somewhere in between a Danny Elfman score for a Tim Burton movie and System of a Down, and you're roughly there.

  • Dinosaur Jr. - Farm

    Peter Luscombe - 1/30/2010

    3 Stars

Don't be fooled by them being labelled as indie, this isn't another one of those generic electro-indie bands with their bland generic music like the Bombay Bicycle Club. Hell Dinosaur Jr. practically invented the indie genre in the 80s along with the Pixies and Sonic Youth but yet no-one over here has heard of them. This is their second release since they reformed a couple of years ago and they're still as strong as ever.

This is one of the few albums I've heard where the artwork matches the music. An odd thing to say but it reminds me of psychedelic rock in some ways, (hence the grass and fumes), but unlike most psychedelic music there is a lot of emotion in here and although lead man Mathis' groans can be annoying at times, 'Plans' stands for me as one of the most heart-warming songs of 2009; kind of like 'Use Somebody' but less mainstream and theatrical.

In fact, so much of today's popular indie borrows from Dinosaur Jr. but yet it is rarely bettered, so if you're into bands like Kings of Leon or Snow Patrol, check this out.
