Greatest is a Duran Duran fan's biggest wish come true (next to a live concert, of course)--all their ground-breaking videos together in one place. More than radio, MTV made mega-stars out of the photogenic group, and few took better advantage of the medium, particularly in the 1980s. Just as their music combined the sophisticated pop of Roxy Music with the electro-funk of Chic, each video is as immaculately styled and conceived as the band itself. Like 1998's Greatest CD collection, this two-DVD set features all their big hits, including uncensored versions of "Girls on Film" and "Come Undone". Directors include Godley and Creme, Julien Temple, and Vogue photographer Ellen Von Unwerth and the albums covered range from 1981's self-titled debut to 1997's Medazzaland. All told: more models, more hair spray and more mascara than a Paris fashion show--but it's got a better beat (and you can dance to it). --Kathleen C Fennessy

IN 1962 FOUR YOUNG MEN JOHN LENNON, PAUL McCARTNEY, GEORGE HARRISON AND RINGO STARR CAME TOGETHER TO FORM THE 20TH CENTURY MUSICAL PHENOMENON KNOWN AS, THE BEATLES. The band stormed Europe in 1963, and, in 1964, they conquered America. Their groundbreaking world tours changed global youth culture forever and, arguably, invented mass entertainment as we know it today. All the while, the group were composing and recording a series of extraordinarily successful singles and albums. However the relentless pressure of such unprecedented fame, that in 1966 became uncontrollable turmoil, led to the decision to stop touring. In the ensuing years The Beatles were then free to focus on a series of albums that changed the face of recorded music. Master storyteller and Oscar® winner*, Ron Howard, explores this incredible journey in his own unique way: How did The Beatles do this? How did they cope with all the fame and pressure? How did they not only survive, but go on to revolutionise popular music? With original interviews, footage, staggering live performances, and the intimate study of character that Ron Howard is known for, he puts us right inside this extraordinary adventure, answering the question everyone always wants to know: What was it like to be there?!!
Michael Jackson's "This Is It" will offer Jackson fans and music lovers worldwide a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the performer as he developed, created and rehearsed for his sold-out concerts that would have taken place this summer.
An ambitious yet practical idea, the Cure's Trilogy underscores the tonal and lyrical connections between three of the band's darkest albums in the last 20 years. The restless, ever-changing group, fronted by goth-gloomster Robert Smith, took up residence at the Tempodrom Berlin for a couple of nights in late 2002 for the express purpose of playing the group's 1982 Pornography, 1989's Disintegration, and 2000's Bloodflowers live and in their entirety. Whether it was a good idea or not depends on one's point of view. All three sets are long on droning, funereal rhythm sections, thick guitar lines that carry good pop melodies to overstylised destruction, and Smith's own cracked, morose vocals. On the other hand, fine distinctions emerge: The Disintegration portion of the show is lightest on its feet, with lush orchestration on "Plainsong", a hint of swing on "Lovesong", and cinematic tendencies in the stirring "The Same Deep Water as You". The rest of the concert is numbing. --Tom Keogh
If any artist deserved a hagiography it was Hendrix, and Joe Boyd's 1973 "authorised" tribute The Jimi Hendrix Story adequately sanctifies the legend. Perversely for a documentary, it achieves this simply by well-chosen concert footage rather than through the insights of the various talking heads. Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed and Germaine Greer are all wheeled out to wax lyrical about their days with Jimi--but nothing is more eloquent than watching and listening to him play. From "Hey Joe" in grainy black and white on Ready Steady Go, classic footage of Monterey, Woodstock (yes, "The Star-Spangled Banner") and the Isle of White festivals, to an acoustic 12-string rendition of "Hear My Train a' Comin'", Hendrix the musician speaks for himself. But if Hendrix the musician shines through, this is not the most insightful profile of Hendrix the man: the circumstances surrounding his death, for example, are hardly touched upon (girlfriend at the time Monika Dannemann gets only a few seconds screen time). Interview footage with Hendrix himself plus some occasionally rambling and incoherent comments from such intimates as his father, army buddies, ex-girlfriends (including Linda Keith, who "discovered" him in New York and brought him to England) and fellow musicians all take second place to the music itself. The most sensible quote comes from Little Richard, who proves once and for all that he's utterly bonkers, when he says of Jimi's music: "At times he made my big toes shoot up into my boot." On the DVD: This is a dual-layer disc, with a widescreen (1.85:1) print on one side and a standard (4:3) ratio version on the other--although watching in widescreen is redundant, as the film is shot in 4:3 anyway. There are no extras other than a theatrical trailer (despite being advertised as such a menu and scene access surely don't count as "special features": what use is a disc without them?) --Mark Walker

While "rock musical" remains a phrase used by sadistic parents to give their offspring nightmares the genre does occasionally throw up the odd gem, Purple Rain being perhaps the shiniest example. Given the theatricality of Prince's stage shows, it was only a matter of time before the diminutive pop potentate found himself a big-screen vehicle but few could have predicted that Purple Rain would become nothing less than a cultural phenomenon. The story, co-written by one-time Starsky & Hutch scripter William Blinn, may be a somewhat hackneyed tale with His Purpleness overcoming a troubled background and musical rival Morris Day to achieve his dreams of rock stardom. However, the cast, which also includes Prince protegée Appollonia, rises above the clichés to hand in a set of performances which, while never likely to trouble the Oscars, prove that all concerned can at least play a rough approximation of themselves with minimal difficulty. What really helped push the film's box-office receipts through the roof, however, was its soundtrack featuring a clutch of hit singles--notably "When Doves Cry"--and which cemented our pint-sized hero's position as one of the globe's premiere performing artists. Sadly, subsequent attempts to re-bottle this particular brand of lightning with Under a Cherry Moon and Graffiti Moon would prove substantially less successful but Purple Rain still looks--and, more importantly sounds--rarely less than funktastic. --Clark Collis

On a beautiful June weekend in 1967, at the beginning of the Summer of Love, the first and only Monterey International Pop Festival roared forward, capturing a decade's spirit and ushering in a new era of rock and roll. Monterey featured career-making performances by JIMI HENDRIX, JANIS JOPLIN, and OTIS REDDING, but they were just a few performers in a wildly diverse line up that included SIMON AND GARFUNKEL, THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS, THE WHO, THE BYRDS, HUGH MASEKELA, and the extraordinary RAVI SHANKAR. With his characteristic vrit styleand a camera crew that included the likes of Albert Maysles and Richard Leacock D. A. As a boy from Brooklyn Neil had the type of upbringing that was always going to take him into music although his mother would have preferred 'classical' rather than 'popular'. Although continuing his classical interest at 17 Neil formed a group called 'The Tokens' and caught the attention of record producer Morty Craft which lead to the group recording a few singles with minor success. In 1957 at the age of 18 he decided to split from the group to promote himself as a solo artist and recorded 'Snowtime' for Decca. It was his first attempt at multi-tracking but the public failed to appreciate the novelty. His big break came the following year when Connie Francis recorded Neil's composition 'Stupid Cupid' and gave him a chance to demonstrate his skills at the piano. The song was a hit and by late '58 he had been elevated to a contractual position with a leading New York publisher.Although writing was earning him cash his real ambition was to perform and with this in mind he joined RCA Records and recorded his million seller 'Oh Carol'. Since then he has never looked back whether writing for others or performing with that most distinctive of sounds. In this breathtaking DVD we present Neil live at the Jubilee Hall in Canada singing evergreens such as 'Standing On The Inside' and many others in an unforgettable performance from one of the world's finest popular entertainers.Performance Listing1.
