One of the key films of the New German Cinema Alice In The Cities marked the emergence of Wim Wenders as one of the most distinctive European filmmakers of the 1970s. It is also widely accepted to be one of the director's most poignant films and the first to be shot partly in the United States. Philip Winter a journalist with writer's block becomes the guardian of eight year-old Alice (Yella Rottlander) when her mother leaves the girl with him briefly at an American airport only never to return. Back in Germany an unlikely friendship develops between the two as they embark on a journey to find Alice's grandmother. Through Rudiger Vogler's portrayal of the embittered Winter Wenders presents a stark but witty account of the changing face of Europe the onset of global consumerism and the influences of American pop culture.
Federico Fellini followed up his iconic breakthrough La strada with this brilliant drama - an unsparing look at the dog-eat-dog values of post war Italian society that nonetheless manages to navigate expertly between the lightly comic and the emotionally stark to become one of his richest most moving works. Il bidone [The Swindle] follows three small-time conmen - the ageing Augusto (Broderick Crawford) Picasso (Richard Basehart) and Roberto (Franco Fabrizi) - as they prey upon the poor and gullible for modest gains. However once Augusto is unexpectedly reunited with his daughter now struggling with her studies the moral and emotional demands of his lifestyle begin to take their toll sooner than he had anticipated. With its masterful set pieces and host of superb performances (including the director's wife and muse Giuletta Masina) this forms the centrepiece of what has been termed Fellini's Trilogy of Loneliness (with bookending films La strada and Le notti di Cabiria) and may be the darkest examination of human nature he ever attempted. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present this long-undervalued classic in a new high-definition restoration. Special Features: Beautiful new high-definition master with the film appearing in 1080p Optional English subtitles Original theatrical trailer 36-Page Booklet featuring the words of Federico Fellini rare imagery and more! Poorly received on initial release the film feels eerily modern due to its timeless themes of the unwelcome intrusion of the past and the terrifying uncertainty of the future both reccurring in Rossellini's work. Ranked 39 in the Sight and Sound's 'Top 50 Greatest Films of all Time' the film has recently received the recognition it deserves with Martin Scorsese even making his own film My Voyage to Italy exploring Italian cinema in general and the film's impact on his work

This 1950 film by Akira Kurosawa is more than a classic: it's a cinematic archetype that has served as a template for many a film since. (Rashomon's most direct influence was on a Western remake, The Outrage, starring Paul Newman and directed by Martin Ritt.) In essence, the facts surrounding a rape and murder are told from four different and contradictory points of view, suggesting the nature of truth is something less than absolute. The cast, headed by Kurosawa's favourite actor, Toshiro Mifune, is superb. --Tom Keogh
