First screened on ITV's South Bank Show in 1981, At the Haunted End of the Day remains the only full-length documentary on Sir William Walton, and is probably the most perceptive of Tony Palmer's composer studies from the 1980s. The first half of Walton's life is the stuff of novels: his unremarkable childhood in Oldham; his years as a chorister at Oxford University; his induction into "high society" by the Sitwell family; above all, the series of major works written during the 1920s and early 30s. The second half--when Walton relocated to Ischia and, surrounded by the tropical garden his wife Susana created, continued to compose impressive but often overlooked works--allows for some stunning footage of the Italian coastline. Musical contributions are plentiful, notably the young Simon Rattle directing Belshazzar's Feast and the First Symphony, and there are revealing interviews with Sacheverell Sitwell and Laurence Olivier. Interspersed throughout is film of the composer at work and in transit: laconic, self-deprecating, yet resolutely aware of his own worth. On the DVD: At the Haunted End of the Day arrives on disc in a standard TV 4:3 video aspect that reproduces well, though picture quality varies according to location. The soundtrack has the required immediacy. There are no subtitles, nor any extras: a "20 years on" postscript would have been welcome, though Palmer does provide some candid observations on the making of music documentaries in the accompanying booklet.--Richard Whitehouse

Peter Green is universally accepted as one of the greatest blues guitarists of all time. BB King famously said of Peter Green He's the only white guy to ever make me sweat. Peter Green's troubles since his departure from Fleetwood Mac in the early 70's are well documented. After a number of years in the wilderness he returned in the mid 90's in the guise of the Peter Green Splinter Group and recaptured the magic of his early days. This concert, recorded in England in 2003, is made up of two sets. The first is a pared down acoustic set of predominantly vintage blues finished off by the all-time Fleetwood Mac classic Albatross, one of the most popular instrumentals ever written. The second is a full on rocking electric set combining blues tracks, Splinter Group originals and other Fleetwood Mac classics. Tracklist:Acoustic Set: 1) Hitch Hiking Woman 2) Sweet Home Chicago 3) Dead Shrimp Blues 4) Can You Tell Me Why (aka Legal Fee Blues) 5) Little Queen Of Spades 6) Hell Hound On My Trail 7) AlbatrossElectric Set: 1) I Believe My Time Ain't Long 2) Running After You 3) Little Red Rooster 4) Ain't Nothing Gonna Change It 5) Shadow On My Door 6) Must Be A Fool 7) The Stumble 8) Cool Down 9) Man Of The World 10) Dangerous Man 11) Need Your Love So Bad 12) Real World 13) The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown) 14) Black Magic Woman 15) Look On Yonder Wall

Filmed in 1980 among the ruins of ancient Rome Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's stunning production marked the beginning of a renaissance for Mozart's late opera and continues to stand out as one of finest opera films of all time. James Levine conducts the Wiener Philharmoniker in this performance of Mozart's operatic marvel driven by imperial intrigue fury and forgiveness.
From Lemmy filmmaker Wes Orshoski comes the story of the long-ignored pioneers of punk: The Damned. The long-ignored pioneers of punk, The Damned started out as trailblazers on London's 70s punk rock scene, being the first British punk band to release a single, the immortal New Rose in 1976. They were the first of their band's genre to release an album, and the first to tour the United States, performing to sell out crowds, where they left a lasting musical legacy. However the critical adoration lavished on contemporaries like The Clash and Sex Pistols always eluded them. Shot around the globe over three years, the film charts the band's complex history and infighting. It captures the band on a world tour and follows its estranged former members striking out on their own anniversary tour. With contributions from Chrissie Hynde, Mick Jones (The Clash), Lemmy and members of Pink Floyd, Black Flag, Guns 'N' Roses, the Sex Pistols, Blondie and The Buzzcocks.

“The Love We Make”, a film directed by Albert Maysles (“Gimme Shelter”) and Bradley Kaplan, follows Paul McCartney as he journeys through the streets of New York City in the aftermath of the destruction of the World Trade Centre on 11 September 2001. It also chronicles the planning and performance of the benefit concert that took place less than six months after the attacks: “The Concert For New York City”. “It was an honour to be able to help New York and America at that time in its history,” said McCartney of the concert. “There was a feeling of shock and fear in the air that I thought we could help alleviate with music and the fact that so many people stepped up to join us made for a very uplifting evening for us all.” The film features performance clips from the benefit concert and backstage moments with many of the performers and other famous attendees.
Edgar Winters musical career began almost forty years ago when he began playing in bands with his elder brother Johnny the famous white bluesman and guitarist. A child prodigy and multi instrumentalist Edgars principal instruments are alto sax keyboards and synthesizer - he was amongst the first musicians to take up and promote the newly-developed instrument. After making a memorable appearance at the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969 Edgar signed to Epic Records and went on to enjoy considerable success in the early Seventies playing his commercial blend of blues jazz and R&B. Edgar has over twenty albums to his name including the double platinum-selling They Only Come Out At Night. In 1973 he had two major US hit singles with Free Ride and the chart-topping Frankenstein the first pop track to feature a synthesizer lead. Both singles along with Tobacco Road remain firm favourites with rock radio stations throughout the world. All three feature in this concert. Over the years he has kept up a busy worldwide touring schedule and Frankenstein was featured in the soundtrack to the blockbuster movie Wayne's World 2. This along with Edgars recent appearances in TV shows and commercials in the States and film work has raised his profile considerably and led to a significant career revival. Tracklist: 1. Revealing the events behind Kurt Cobain's death as seen through the eyes of Tom Grant the private investigator hired by Courtney Love in 1994 to track down her missing husband (Kurt Cobain) only days before his deceased body was found at their Seattle home. Cobain's death was ruled as suicide by the police (a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound). However doubts have circulated for over two decades as to the legitimacy of this ruling especially due to the work of Mr. Grant a former L.A. County Sheriff's detective who did his own investigation and determined there was significant empirical and circumstantial evidence to conclude that foul play could very well have occurred. The film develops as a narrative mystery with cinematic re-creations interviews with key experts and witnesses and the examination of official artefacts from the 1994 case.
The Rolling Stones 1978 tour of the USA in support of that year’s “Some Girls” album is considered by fans to be one of their very best. The tour followed immediately on the release of the “Some Girls” album and by the time the band arrived in Texas in mid-July the album had hit the No.1 spot on the US charts. The tour took a “back to basics” approach, with the band and their music very much at the forefront and little or no elaborate staging.Filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on 18 July 1978, this concert is typical of the tour with the Rolling Stones delivering a raw, energetic performance in front of a crowd who are clearly loving the show. Many of the tracks from “Some Girls” are included in the live set with a sprinkling of Stones classics from earlier albums. Originally shot on 16mm film, the footage has been carefully restored and the sound remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack tapes. This is undeniably the Rolling Stones at the peak of their form.
